ENIO SARTORI
Enio Sartori The author has been pursuing an esthetical-literary research which, exploring the several cultural layers, the many souls that define the border land of the Vicenza Prealps and, in general, of the North-East of Italy, made him recognize its most significant features: the mittleuropean and the mediterranean ones. That interest lead to many publications and awards. Among them:
- Publication of texts of poetry and literary criticism in the magazine of mittleuropean culture “Spazio Mitteleuropeo”; he won the prize for literary critics promoted by the magazine “Il Bagordo” (Milan) with the essay: “Rima e citazione in Mallarmé” (“Rhyme and citation in Mallarmé”); publication (1989) of “Vedi alla voce corpo” (“See the lemma: body”) with the publisher Ellemme Lucarini (Rome).
- His activity of neo-dialect poet has been rewarded with many prizes. Among them: the national poetry award of Torri di Quartesolo, the national poetry award Giacomo Noventa-Romano Pascutto, the national poetry award Walter Tobagi (Venice). He published in 2000 for Signum (Padua) “Alla soglia dell’alba. Il Summano e la leggenda di Sant’Orso tra mito e storia” (“On the edge of dawn. The Summano Mount e the Sant’Orso legend between myth and history”); in 2002 an audio-book of poems titled “Parole suonate in controcanto” (“Words sung in controcanto”), il Narratore, Padova.
- For his peculiar poetic research he participated to Ricercare 2001. Laboratorio di nuove scritture (Resarch 2001. Laboratory of new writings) in Reggio Emilia;
- A dance-theatrical performance, by Chiara Bortoli and Gabriele Grotto, was based on his text “Anguane”. The pièce was staged at the Festival internazionale di Arte contemporanea di Topolò (UD);
- In 2002 he wrote and realized the theatrical reading “Le voci del Tar. Una storia partigiana dell’Altovicentino” (“The voices of Tar. A partisan story”);
- In 2002 he participated as writer and voice over to the project “Il pellegrinaggio della voce” (“Pilgrimage of the voice”) of the Algerian writer Tahar Lamri;
- In 2003 he wrote the theatrical pièce “Storia Ocarea”, brought on scene by Pino Costalunga;
- He cooperates with the Master in Intercultural Studies of the Faculty of Humanities and Philosophy of the Padua University. His field of interest and critical intervention focuses on the relation between languages, territories, migrations – in general and in the North-East region in particular.

ENIO SARTORI

SOME NOTES ON POETRY
The fact of living now in the northern part of the Vicenza province and, more generally, in the Italian Northeast, strongly influences my poetic tone and perspective. More specifically, the theme of one’s place of residence leads immediately to a poetics of emigration, or better, of the “outsider”.
As I’ve tried to do with my poetry, it would suffice to let speak the voices, the bodies, the stories of this territory to discover that each one of our residences here is an ever-flowing synthesis of the processes of hybridization, of contamination, of cross-breeding, of fluid linguistic registers.
Thus the border zones (and that of northern Vicenza is a particular example) are like an ambivalent two-headed Janus: the border unites at the same instant that it separates, it fluctuates forward and backwards, it becomes a crossroad, a clearing zone marked by escape routes that must be recognized and respected. The frontier facilitates paths of transcodification between the alpine/pre-alpine zone and that of the plains, from the plains to that of the seacoast and viceversa; it is built on betrayals, on translations, on contraband. To state it with the lovely words of the anarchic character Tonlè, in the book by Mario Rigoni Stern, in it the limits are recognized only to be violated, crossed, in a nomadic criss-crossing that pushes outward, towards an “outwardness” that is not an appendix to identity but constitutes its most incandescent nucleus, its nourishment.
Therefore for me it is not so much a matter of cataloguing, of representing the landscape, but to keep open the connections, the directions, the possible pathways, to produce the territorial frames that are simultaneously open to new modes of concatenation, to new rapports, to new complicities.
After this brief discourse, an answer might be closer, paraphrasing Chatwin, to the most pertinent question of the here, the now and which, I believe, transverses many of us from the inside out: “But what am I doing here?” As such the Venetian labyrinth seems a bit more accessible and the same applies to its floating icon, Venice – that Proteus-like, magmatic, ungraspable city where, as the mitteleuropean writer Hofmansthal underscores, “one cannot stay, one is unable to find direction without simultaneously getting lost”. The same goes for me: I am unable to stay here without simultaneously being on a perpetual path of escape, in a process of infinite dislocation.
I agree with what Andrea Zanzotto states, in his splendid book Filò, written in the Veneto dialect, with regard to dialect language and poetry: “When I write in dialect I feel the need to destroy all the margins, to go far away, to run off the road in search of a bewildered vitality, in limine, frail and intense as a blood thread” because the dialect seems to come from beyond, “from where there is neither writing nor grammar; from a magmatic place where each territory fades into the contiguous one that remands to a land forever lost and forever arriving”.
“Go to that place, there, farther”, while some other town folk would add: Go to that place, there beyond, there at the end”. And I, a child, would wander off aimlessly, not toward some fixed place but toward a series of settings that reflected each other, that echoed one to the other. Now as then my eyes saw the horizon not as a finite line but as a pattern that offered prospective landscapes to be imagined, because the land towards which I aspire now, as I did then, remains unrealized.

FRAME I
(The Presence)
Lullaby. Note
of the anguana, song
that enchants,
divine nursery rime
lulling lullaby
voice of the witch
She comes out
from the deepest
of holes, this very dark
smithy, this queen
of old treasures
who rises in the air
with a visage of rain
and gentle step,
profile and flame
in drunken dance
she seems made of breath
Freeing herself she climbs up
again and slowly earth’s
breath is rekindled
by the tongue of anguana.
And whiten the wool
weave the sea-foam thread
block out the wave
and uncomb the water
in magical form
I stand
at the edge of the stream
Oh, the itch
the desire
to look in her eyes
to touch her
only one time
for a brief time
At the center of the torrent
she flows close to me
then passes beyond
to slide
inside the cave.
Make her jump,
make her dance
move around her
but let her go
FRAME II
(The Death of the Anguana)
-Man on white horse
go tell Tita Tata
that Tita Tela
is mortally ill
-Where is Tita Tata?
She is at the fountain
doing the wash
to wash all the wool.
The man on white horse
comes to the fountain
-Run, run, Tita Tata
because Tita Tela
is mortally ill.
Quickly Tita Tata
dives into the fountain
disappears down the drain
…arrives in the cove of the anguana.
As if by magic
the river sings a song
maybe lullaby or dirge.
Tita Tata looks towards
the end of the green valley.
At the mouth of the cave
the horseman is grinning
a man without grace
who with the back of his hand
pounds on the water
strikes the living wave
pulls apart and tears up,
rips out and strangles
That ladies’ man is grimacing,
the man on the white horse
Her secret revealed,
the Tita Tela trips
on the wire strung
between life and death,
Slowly she disappears
on the white horse that trots
with the steps of death
Ill-fated horseman
gallop, gallop and sing
as you near the hole of death
FRAME III
(The Disappearance)
The voice is locked within
like a flower in the night
the spirit unravels
like windflower in the breeze
whose tender patience
is buried under ground
On the surface the tired, slow stream
hold a bunch of wet rags
while below the gloomy waves
say with anguish: “love, dream, folly”
voice and words that die in the throat,
faint cat cry the waters wash away
Oh, mind’s hollow trace
oh whisper of nothingness,
only the wind of absence
is blowing in the cave
And I sing without voice

The eye of the mole

chewed by the rays of the sun
In the sky a falcon slices the air

Above is only the falcon’s shadow

In the cradle of the mountain rides
astride a Bedouin moon
and a knife blade climbs from below

Queen of darkness, ride the horizon!

thousands and thousands of such nights
siphoning air and bile and blood
and crown of dew and ancient saliva
So at times the body is distracted
by the mountain’s bitter grip
and shines on a dream’s edge
filled with ecstasy without regret

Where the sea climbs towards the coast
it strips the sunlight
into shadows, into bundles of rocks
of ravines and caves and underground veins,
salt water hardens to quartz;
the silk unravels, the falcon veers off
the seagull is tired on the wave
that flakes into leaf, a mound of straw
and stops estranged on top of the mountain.
Oh mountain-monster that furrows the eyebrows
and points the eyes towards north east
thick body, rudder that slices the border
of heart, of mind, before each other thing
and makes the sky swirl,
do not forget me,
us, hardened like bloodstone,
who sail by sight
and are worn down, in exile
along these ill-knotted paths!
Oh alchemical beast that chews
its stories, short tales and glossolalia
or whimpers between tiny holes and Babelic cave-ins
and in dreams endlessly mumbles to Death
for a little bit, a little bit of …!
And from the asthmatic mountainsides
arises a faint reply, a lullaby.
The people of the plain open their ears
and cry out: “Lorenza, Lorenza!”
Beautiful blossom
trapped in the bat’s beating wings,
poor girl who drips from the mouth
her obsession or bitter root,
her witch divinations, her curses
which the mountain and time slowly
drown out or change to litanies.
Inside, the hole remains black, black
dark, dark, bleak, bleak.
Outside is all a death-rattle of ecolalia
of useless words
my mother moves among the chatter
her rosary of memories
buried among dolls and partisans
and she tells
of the lively playing with death
in the weft between forest and neighbourhood
inside the chestnut forest, wood of freedom.
Her tales of the resistance still tasted
of earth, of the forest that confounds
of the hollow that hides
wild mimesis in another flowering
life, of the bear, rabbit and vixen.
Under the skin, under the tongue, downwind
even this flaw in time pulverizes,
the blood, the tears clot into dead stone
and goes to death between crevices
of the past that saddens and blackens the eye
within the shadow the suspect keeps alive
on the crooked plain among harems
and new altars and camps off limit
and security measures
in this spiteful “shut up, shut up!
that tears at the soul and piles up
and devours all my, all your desires.
In the tedium enraging the plain
only fear comes to the surface;
in the fog that irritates the skin
memory flakes away, folded
into the new world order.
And this old parish turns black
with rage, crucifying in anger other
new, poor fellows taken for a ride
then rises above for self-absolution.
Among pains and laments it turns the eye
from the Pasubio to the Cencio and Grappa
and forgets in the absence of the chestnut tree,
of the hole, of the forest,
it shines with anxiety even to the Balcans
and beyond, in nervous space and veers
in the murky turbulence of economy
that dazzles the sight with its nullity
and chokes life in embargo at the origin.
On top of this undone disenchantment
the mountain projects a deaf glare
and measures my neighbourhood
against the earth’s curvature,
and of me channelling these tired words
inside the cut of the world.
